When I decided to write a novel that involved Native Americans and Skin Walkers, I researched both their mythology and use in fiction. I found that the legend of skinwalkers is one of the most haunting and complex tales within Native American mythology. Rooted deep in the spiritual traditions and oral histories, skinwalkers are often viewed as both symbols of lore and reflections of broader cultural values. Over time, skin walkers (also known as werewolves) expanded into popular fiction, reshaping their meaning while retaining their mystique.

In Native American traditions, a skinwalker is a witch or shapeshifter capable of transforming into or possessing the form of animals. The skinwalker legend is a part of a broader belief system that respects the natural world, values harmony, and warns against greed and misuse of power. 

Skinwalkers are usually feared due to their association with witchcraft, dark magic, and ill intent. They are often described as figures who wield their powers to exact revenge, spread disease, or manipulate others. Their ability to mimic voices, adopt animal forms, and instill terror makes them powerful symbols of treachery and danger.

In Native American culture, speaking openly about skinwalkers is taboo. Naming or discussing them is believed to invite their attention, a dangerous prospect given their vengeful nature. This secrecy not only heightens their mythic status but also reflects the deep-rooted cultural respect for the power of words and belief.

While skinwalkers are overwhelmingly associated with harm, there is an underlying acknowledgment of the potency of their abilities. Their skills in transformation and deep connection to the spiritual realm are traits that could, theoretically, be used for good if wielded differently. 

Moreover, the tales of skinwalkers remind people to avoid envy and greed, and value harmony over personal gain. 

As skinwalker legends moved beyond Native American culture into broader storytelling, they underwent significant changes. As an author, I well know that we want to put our own creative spin on any sort of mythical creature. Today, skinwalkers often appear as shapeshifters or supernatural beings, usually with no connection to their original culture. For example, in novels and television series like The X-Files or Tony Hillerman’s mystery novels, skinwalkers are reimagined to fit narratives of suspense and horror.
